Cash register is an autonomous electronic device with fiscal functions, equipped with a display, a keyboard and a printing mechanizm, which print information on a special paper roll.

Electronic cash register (ECR) is used when paying for the goods sold and services rendered, and must be entered in the state register of electronic cash registers (RRO in ukrainian). The main task is to record in the memory of the device and on paper (cash receipt) the transaction of sale and purchase. Data on goods (articles) are stored in the memory of the cash register. The operator (cashier) types in the product code on the keyboard or scans a bar code using a bar code scanner connected to the cash register, and then "punch" (print) a receipt.

Cash registers are classified by area of application, method of printing and design. According to the areas of application there are cash registers for retail, catering and services, postal enterprises, gas stations. Cash registers for sales at gas stations meet special fiscal requirements, as well as the hotel category entered in the state register of registers of cash transactions devices for use in currency exchange offices, as well as casinos and other gambling establishments. By design cash registers are divided into stationary and mobile. Portable cash registers have the ability to work without permanent connection to the power grid. According to the method of printing ECR are divided into matrix and thermal printers.

Electronic cash register usually has the ability to connect the cash drawer, bar code scanner, electronic scales.
